Bill Gates's youngest daughter said that the negative aspects of her family's fame stemming from her father's wealth and heritage are the misconceptions people have about them.
The 20-year-old shares snippets of her life with Microsoft's co-founder and her mother, Melinda French Gates, and has amassed over 64,000 fans on TikTok as a result.
"I'm pretty realistic that people start following me because of my family name. And people probably find it funny to see my dad being a goof and playing Boxbollen," Gates told The Information in an email.
Gates has lately posted videos of her "contraceptive talk with my mom" and her father's hilarious dance moves from her childhood. Since posting it in December, her video of Bill Gates playing boxball has amassed 8.3 million views.
"People have a lot of preconceptions about me, so TikTok has been a chance for me to tell my own story and also use the attention my family name might bring to spotlight issues that are important to me, like women's health and sustainable fashion," said Phoebe.
Even though her family name may be what draws people to her profile, she says in an interview that was featured on Insider that many of her followers "stick around" because of the issues she advocates for.
While Gates acknowledges the benefits of her platform, she told the Information that "misconceptions and conspiracy theories about my family and my relationship with my boyfriend" abound on social media.
